WHAT MAKES HER AN AWESOME TUTOR
Back in middle school, my sole aspiration was to become a teacher. To me, they were the most powerful people on earth. They had the ability to stand in front of a big classroom and influence as many as 40 kids. Their speeches would carry so many new and interesting ideas that bring out the kids’ curiosity. A raise of their eyebrows would lead to some rapid heartbeats. Their power inspired me so much that I even practiced teaching my friends. The satisfaction gained from successfully helping my peers solve challenging problems galvanized me to pursue a teaching job. However, I soon realized that the true superpower of a teacher didn’t lie in where she stood in the classroom or her raise of eyebrows. Rather, it’s her ability to empower her students to discover a math formula and feel confident with Math. Math is about reasoning and given that each child has their own reasoning schema, my job is to learn how they reason things and modify my teaching according to what makes the most sense to them. I want to give my students ownership of their knowledge.
