what makes heR AWESOME AT HER JOB

I distinctly recall my first real job, at the age of thirteen: tutoring Grade 10 math. A whirlwind extravaganza of tutoring various grades in math has since taught me countless lessons: most importantly, that finding the right 'fit' for you, discovering the perfect connection with a tutor, can make all the positive difference. I'm extremely passionate about understanding student's stories and experiences, what their goals and dreams are, and what barriers might hinder them - and from there, grasping what they need to take their educational journey to the next level. The satisfaction of establishing and facilitating that connection; watching students and tutors inspire and learn from each other, and ultimately, succeed holistically is immeasurable. It's what everyone at TMG is here for!

fun facts

Life Goal: I have always been a social justice-oriented individual with a passion for advocacy and working in tandem with marginalized individuals whose narratives and voices have been historically disregarded, to envision and create better alternatives. To meaningfully engage with my larger community, to understand the lived experiences of others, and inspire positive social change – even the most minute – is my raison d’être! But first and foremost, I’d say my life goal is to improve as an individual holistically; to find a path that sates my curiosity, drive for knowledge and positive change; and to remain grounded, hopeful, resilient, and determined, even in the face of adversity. Oh – and I’d love to travel every corner of the globe and live by the ocean (or any large body of water) one day, for an extended period of time!

Words to Live By: Two gems that never fail to keep my mind whirring and my soul inspired:

"You are personally responsible for becoming more ethical than the society you grew up in."

"Sometimes [bravery] is nothing more than gritting your teeth through pain, and the work of every day, the slow walk towards a better life. That is the sort of bravery I must have now."

Favourite Mathematical Weapon: Good old pencil and paper, and the unwavering belief that there is always a solution waiting to be found (even if it does require some thinking outside of the box or considering problems from varying perspectives)!

get to know ANGELA

Education: I’m a recent graduate of McMaster University’s interdisciplinary Arts & Science program with a Combined Honours degree in Health Studies. I plan on pursuing further education by attending law school in the near future.

Fave Tech device: By far my laptop. Oh, the places it can go and the things it allows me to do! I also love the satisfying sound of its keyboard when I’m working away. AND honourable mentions to Spotify, because I need a soundtrack to every mood and moment of my life.

Fave Book: Yeesh, this one is very difficult to answer. I’ve always loved fiction (and I enjoy writing fiction too!) and delving into the world of the imagination and fantasy, so many transferable life lessons to be learned from imperfect protagonists in their arduous quests. A few years ago, one of my wonderful friends introduced me to the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and I haven’t been the same since.

Fave Song: I tend to become deeply enamoured with certain songs and listen to the same song 20 times in a row daily over the span of a week, only to become entranced by another song two weeks later. Right now, it’s “Nina Cried Power” by Hozier (an amazing EP!). Shameless plug and shoutout to all my other favourite musicians, ANYTHING by these artists is pure gold: The Weeknd, Florence + The Machine, Hozier, Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys, Banks, Oh Wonder & Lykke Li!

Fave Outfit: Fall fashion, unquestionably. A long, black fall coat paired with Doc Martens/heeled boots and a dress or sweater, skirt, and tights.

Fave TV Show: Kim’s Convenience, The Good Place, Jane the Virgin, and Stranger Things – I’m more of a movie person than a TV show person, but these four series won me over in little to no time.

Fave Movie: Black Swan, Up (2009), Pride & Prejudice, The Harry Potter Series; and just about anything with dreamy cinematography and intense drama.

When you're not tutor matchmaking: Day-dreaming, people-watching, humming, exploring the city with friends, and swimming in (or lurking about) bodies of water. I’m also CONSTANTLY devising new plotlines and dreaming up new characters and villains in my head.

What's the best thing about you? I'm extremely empathetic and will celebrate your successes, share your sorrows, and all other emotions along the spectrum. I’m also a highly determined individual and will do whatever it takes to achieve my goals, once I put my mind to it – especially when they revolve around helping others!

nerd alert!

I’ve always loved mental math. I used to ask acquaintances and friends to test me by giving me two random numbers to multiply and time how long it took.

I’m also really oddly fond of prime numbers; the backbone of so many wonderful things (looking at you 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, etc.!). When I’m stuck in traffic, I’ll usually amuse myself by finding the prime factorization of license plate numbers in front of me.
