Richard

what makes him an awesome tutor

I've been told that I'm very good at explaining things to people. I think that stems from a good understanding of the material you're trying to convey and the genuine connection I can make with people. The more you know/are comfortable with what you're talking about and who you're speaking with, the better you're able to allude to personal experiences/examples that convey the material better. Much of what we learn, we get the sense is not that interesting or useful, but the universe and everything about it is AWE INSPIRING; math is a TOOL that people USE to describe things and make predictions (and if that don't get you pumped, I'll find a way to relate it to you so that your mind is just as blown as mine).

fun facts

Life Goal: To use my education to make a positive impact on the world. Maybe I watch too much political satire/news, but I want to use my life to find a way to improve the lives of others. One specific goal that comes to mind is the question of global warming and to find a way to usefully sequester carbon (maybe while at the same time creating a green source of electricity... think organic batteries).

Words to Live By: Einstein liked inventing phrases such as "God does not play dice," "The Lord is subtle but not malicious." On one occasion Bohr answered, "Einstein, stop telling God what to do."

Favourite Mathematical Weapon: Fractal geometry! It is crazy beautiful and it applies to all kinds of natural phenomena, like cloud formation and the growth patterns of trees and plants.

get to know Richard

Education: Bachelor of science ic Chemistry, pursuing a Masters of science in organic Chemistry next year.

Fave Tech device: Anything that let's me play my music on it! (cellphone, laptop, and yet I don't have an mp3 player of any sort...)

Fave Band: Like way too many to narrow it down to one. If we're specific to just bands/groups over any other act then let's go ahead with Mumford & Sons!

Fave Song: At the moment, "I'm Not the Only One" by the Soulful Sam Smith

Fave Outfit: Keep it simple, but keep it clean....dark jeans, Timberlands and a sweater/hoodie (yay fall!)

Fave TV Show: Dang... Absolute favourite is hard to narrow down.... LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER (yay satire!)

Fave Movie: : I like movies that make you think... I also like comedies, action movies and thrillers... absolute top pic I think would be "Revolver" by Guy Ritchie... really makes you think (watch the IFC version with the interviews at the end!)

When you're not crunching numbers: At the moment of this interview, it's been a while, but I genuinely enjoy weightlifting. The Iron never lies and is much more than physical activity; it's a way to use your state of mind to have an effect on your surroundings. It's as much a mental release as it  is physical and the endorphin rush after a good workout is parallel to nothing I've experienced. I also enjoy puzzle games, video games and spend a lot of my weekends (when I'm done studying) with friends. Oh and everything is better with music.

What’s the best thing about you?

My big ol' heart. I genuinely care about people and like to see others succeed... anything I can do to help that process along gives me a sense of accomplishment unparalleled by any of the grades/achievements I get otherwise. It makes me a loyal person and more patient I think

nerd alert!

Ask me to make a spark out of a battery and a piece of tin foil. Just ask!
